CNC Swiss Machining of Ultem® Insulator for the Aerospace Industry

With its light weight and high heat resistance, Ultem® is a popular material for aerospace precision machining. These insulators are a necessary component for the electrical features on an airplane, even though they were only 0.500” in length. With precision plastic machining, there is no room for compromise in accuracy.

The Project

Aerospace precision machining requires plastics that stand up to heat without adding weight to the finished product. Ultem® 1000 in natural-clear was the material for the job. We received 2D CAD drawings of the component from the customer to move forward with swiss machining. Then, to create a large quantity of insulators for this order, we needed an efficient process that maintained high tolerances and quality while working quickly.

The Severna Solution:
Aerospace Precision Machining

Severna Operations is an ISO 9001-certified and AS 9100-compliant company, capable of meeting the demands of any industry. With our expert technicians and capabilities, the Severna Operations team produced the insulator in a single step. After production, the piece was cleaned thoroughly by hand and with cryogenic methods to leave no room for compromise in its end use.
