Custom Plastic Fabrication | An Overview of Our Services

In 2021, the plastic industry produced $395 billion in shipments in the United States alone.  Plastic is in virtually everything we see, do, and touch. In everything from cars to medical equipment, you’ll find plastic incorporated one way or another. Since plastic is so common, it should be no surprise that companies offering custom plastic fabrication are in high demand. Custom plastic part fabrication is a huge industry, and we set ourselves apart with our unmatched precision.

Are you interested in learning more about our plastic fabrication services? Read on to get an overview of what our custom plastic fabricators can do for you!

Services We Offer

For any business using fabricated plastic goods, we offer a wide range of services. Some of the industries we produce plastic parts for include the aerospace, automotive, and chemical fields. To give you a better idea of our company, let’s take a deep dive into the services we offer.

Plastic CNC Swiss Screw Machining

Swiss screw machining is most commonly used for cylindrical parts with very tight tolerances. The plastic is fitted onto a headstock that spins at high speeds. The CNC operator then feeds it into a guide bushing, where precision tooling equipment makes cuts.

A big benefit of swiss screw machining is that the process produces parts with extremely accurate dimensions. This accuracy results from the minimized distance between the workpiece and the guide bushing. We offer both CNC and CAM equipment to better meet your plastic fabrication needs. Our CAM machines are equipped for stop spindle and pickup processes and can handle parts up to 1″ wide. Our CNC machines are capable of machining parts with a diameter up to 3″.

Even if you need very detailed plastic parts, we’ve got you covered. We offer Swiss screw machining for part features as small as .008″. Because Swiss screw machining is an easily repeatable process, it is suitable for producing a large volume of units.

Plastic CNC Vertical Milling

Vertical milling is a process where the cutting tool rotates at high speed. The cutting tool is then used to remove material from the workpiece. CNC milling can involve moving the cutting tool side to side or back and forth. Vertical milling, however, involves specifically up and down movement.

Common applications of vertical milling include drilling, boring, and threading. Best for simpler part designs, CNC vertical milling is an excellent choice for manufacturing larger parts. We can mill parts up to dimensions of 50″ x 20″ x 25″.

Plastic Centerless Grinding

Unlike other machining processes, centerless grinding shapes the workpiece by abrasion.

An abrasive wheel removes material from the piece without using any end pressure. Instead, a regulating wheel presses the length of the piece against the grinding wheel.

Centerless grinding can also use a cutting tool along with the grinding wheel to create intricate shapes.

Like Swiss screw machining, centerless grinding is best suited for round shapes. However, because the material is cut lengthwise, this process is more efficient for longer parts, with a maximum length of 12 feet.

Since there is no need to secure the workpiece into a chuck, it’s fast and easy to load materials for machining. As a result, centerless grinding offers a quick turnaround time even for long parts.

Plastic CNC Turning

In CNC machining, turning refers to the process of shaping a workpiece with a lathe.

To perform CNC turning, the machinist secures the workpiece into a chuck which rotates it horizontally. The lathe then uses precision cutting tools to achieve the desired shape.

CNC turning is an extremely precise method of machining plastic. It allows for complex shapes like tapers and contours and produces highly accurate cuts.

Whether you need one prototype or a large production run, CNC turning is a good solution for parts up to 12″ long and 8″ wide.

Finishing Services

Once a part has gone through all the machining processes, we take great care to provide a high-quality finished product.

Our facility offers cryogenic as well as hand deburring services. We can also provide engraving and etching to further customize your order.

To ensure our products always meet tolerance requirements, we use advanced metrology equipment. All of our parts go through our Vertex Microvue Precision Measuring System for inspection.

Quality Custom Plastic Fabrication

At Severna, we pride ourselves on our wide range of machining services and our commitment to precision. We’re equipped to fulfill high-volume orders or produce orders as small as one prototype for in-house use.

For almost every type of plastic and geometric shape, we’re able to meet tolerances as narrow as ±0.0005″. We maintain high precisions standards even for larger production runs.

In addition to our range of machining services, our custom ABS plastic fabricators are able to 3D print designs. Currently, our 3D printing capacity is only for prototypes and not for parts meant for end-users.

We have over 60 years of experience serving our community with quality custom plastic machining. Our customers can always expect quality products and a quick turnaround time.
